On December 8, 2008, the computer mouse turned 40 and, like many of us who reach that totemic and solemn age, the unappreciated little fellow next to your keyboard will doubtless take the opportunity to reflect on some ups and downs, roads not taken, bridges burned and opportunities scorned. But he'll also doubtless also raise a glass and say 'Well, at least I'm still around'.

On 9 December, 1968, Hugo Montenegro's theme from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly topped the US charts. Perhaps Doug Engelbart heard it as he drove towards a convention centre in San Francisco to give a presentation to show 1000 attendees the first demonstration of the mouse. Looking a little like a presenter of The Twilight Zone, he showed how a mouse could be used to control a cursor (but referred to by Engelbart and cohorts as a bug) to move around blocks of text. The mouse was patented but the patent terms ran out in 1987, according to Wikipedia, just a few years before it became an essential part of the personal computing world.

The mouse was popularised by the rise of the WIMP or GUI, first on the Xerox Star, later on Apple systems and subsequently on Windows PCs. A little like its traditional partner in crime the QWERTY keyboard, for much of its life people have talked about what will replace it, but trackballs, touchpads, digitisers, touchscreens and pens have largely been seen off and most of us still find the keyboard/mouse combination as the most effective way to operate a desk-based computer.

As computer designs have morphed it is quite remarkable that the mouse is still going strong and appearing in a wide and sometimes bizarre variety of wired and wireless, single and multi-button formats from ingenious companies like Logitech.

Gartner's Steve Prentice contends that the mouse could be replaced by a new paradigm and certainly it is true that the success of the iPhone, the Wii and other products hint that the way we interact with computers is changing quickly towards a world of interpreted gestures. However, it would not be completely surprising if the mouse were to be still here in another four decades so long as having a quick, cheap efficient way of manipulating text and other screen objects is required. After all, as the greetings card industry never tires of telling us, life begins at 40.

Will the Computer Mouse be Replaced? What About the Mouse Pad?

In the article “Analyst: Computer mice could be extinct in 3-to-5 years,” Analyst Steve Prentice states, “The mouse works fine in the desktop environment … for home entertainment or working on a notebook, it’s over.” Prentice uses examples of the Nintendo Wiimote and the iPhone touchscreen to show how far input devices have come. Although mouse maker Logitech has denied any claims of moving away from the mouse, it is something to think about.

After I read this article, I immediately thought of the new hp desktop computer that uses a touchscreen as the main input device. I started seeing commercials for this computer in June of this year.

Do you think future input devices will ever really be able to replace the mouse?

For palm held devices and games, yes. For desktops, well, that's another story altogether. Ergonomically, it doesn't make sense at all. The mouse is here to stay for awhile.

Utter nonsense....Touch screens make your fingers sore after a day of use...what about photoshop? etc. This analyst says Touch screens will only be a fad and the mouse will stay...touchscreens will remain an option....Nice attention getting headline leading to nothing substantive.

I really cannot see the all helpful and easy to use mouse to be replaced any time soon. I mean honestly it’s had such a long run and with today’s shape/look and feel it just makes it so much easier to use a mouse in comparison to any other device. The field is open to many ideas and there’s virtually unlimited amount of these ideas that could replace our mouse... but no matter what happens, the ever so loved MOUSE will never be replaced in our hearts.

I saw an interesting new take on the mouse at CeBIT earlier this year. Their website is www.futuremouse.com. It will be interesting to see if anything comes of it, or if its just vapourware for now...

Hmm. I don't think this will be the case. Many people don't like touchscreens, and motion devices are a pain to use for pointer input. Perhaps more people will change over after Windows 7, but the mouse will probably stay for a while yet.

Will the mouse really go away? I think the only way it will go away is when it demonstrates that it will give a higher productivity to everyone doing their tasks. That includes most of all in the work/business space. I travel and work alot and I can't even go without my mouse much. I can't see devices like the Wiimote or touch screens increasing my Excel or Word productivity very much to be honest. It'll need to be more innovative if its going to dominate the world over the mouse. For games these devices are definetly good. For everyday life? completely different story.

The mouse will remain, but not in it's current form. Having worked for companies that deliver touchscreen solutions, they are not a replacement for either the keyboard for typing nor the mouse for gaming. Touchscreens are good input devices for switching or turning on/off applications.

In my opinion the mouse will develop into a hand mounted device similar to a Wii controller, wireless and with a button for every finger (and thumb).

I don't think the mouse will be gone. I think we need it to use a desk top computer. The mouse may evolve into something else for hand held devices, but we need a pointing device on our desk top for our computers. Can you think the strain and pain it would create if we had to touch screen on a desk top?

There are too many new innovations coming along in the "computer mouse" world. Look at the heated mouse. It's an USB warm mouse that generates heat to keep cold mouse hand warm. Plus, all the other advancements in desk top computing would not allow the computer mouse and mouse pad to disappear. We need them for ergonomics!

Cold weather doesn’t have to mean cold hands, but it often does - numb fingers stumble around the focus knob of binoculars, struggle to leaf through a field guide, and beg to be wrapped around a hot cup of coffee.

The first way to prevent cold hands is to not be cold anywhere - when the body begins to feel cold, it responds by reducing circulation to the extremities, and that’s bad news for the hands and feet. Being warm is a package deal. So wear the right layers, get a good hat and neck gaiter, and you are on the way to warm hands.

What you eat and drink is also important, and unfortunately, coffee is on the do NOT consume list. Coffee is a vaso-constrictor and as such reduces circulation to the extremities, exactly what you don’t need. However, you can and should ingest some other not-necessarily-good-for-you-otherwise foods: fats. Fatty foods like cheese, eggs, bacon, or peanut butter are very calorically dense foods, and calories keep you warm.

Obviously, to have warm hands you’re going to need some kind of glove or mitten. Mittens are warmer than gloves because your fingers work as a team to keep warm. But although some birders use mittens, I find they impair dexterity with optics too much, and have always preferred gloves.

My favorite birding gloves were actually designed as shooting gloves by a company called Bob Allen. Made of leather with an insulated lining, these keep hands warm down to upper 20’s F, and colder when I’m dealing with in-and-out-of-the-car birding.

If it’s damp or rainy, waterproof gloves are a must, so a glove with a Gore-tex liner and Thinsulate or other insulation is called for. I have two pairs of these, one with lightweight 50-gram insulation, and another with much heavier 150-gram insulation that are quite big and bulky, but warm. The latter gloves were also designed for shooting, and have a less-insulated index finger that makes it a bit easier to focus binoculars.

In extreme cold, disposable hand warmers are a final line of defense against cold hands. I usually place these inside my gloves, on the palm side so I can wrap my fingers around the hand warmer.

Handling cold binoculars or metal tripods will quickly chill hands. The tripod issue can be helped by wrapping the legs with foam insulation of the type used to insulate around water pipes, readily available at any home supply store. As far as binoculars, no one has come up with a binocular heater (yet), but a somewhat effective substitute is the dashboard of your car. Between stops, toss your bins on the dash and run the defroster. They won’t be frigid when you next get out, and if it’s been a bit of a drive, will feel quite toasty for a little while.

Dear Graphic Design department:

I understand that your computer labs are also your regular teaching rooms. That doesn’t excuse some of the behaviour you let the students get away with in there. They are still rooms full of expensive equipment, and the fact that you let them dick around in your computer labs makes them think it’s acceptable in the rest of the labs too.

You should also be aware that if you continue to react with indifference to my complaints of finding (for example) that a computer mouse has been covered with spray glue, I will continue to de-prioritise your problems in favour of people whose problems are not down to neglecting the equipment.

How smooth does your mouse move? Today, I get the pleasure of checking out the Nova MicroTech gaming mousepad. Compared to some of Nova's other mousepads, the MicroTech is a bit smaller than others. For that reason, I decided to check this one out using my laptop and wireless mouse.

As I mentioned in my previous Nova review, their mousepads have the uncanny ability to stick to anything but water, and even that is negotiable. The MicroTech is no different. Sitting in my living room, I stuck the pad to my coffee table beside my laptop. It's hard to turn away when Sci Fi is doing their 31 Day of Halloween. So with Warwick Davis jabbering about gold in the background, I proceeded to check out the pad.

The laptop I am testing on is my Latitude D600, which is what I use for most of my writing. I recently purchased a Gear Head wireless mouse to use with it, and have had no problems out of it so far. So I figured rather than hook up a wired mouse for the testing I might as well use what I would normally use anyway. Gotta get some real world use out of the products, right?

Here are a few details to get you going while I play around with it:

So after a little while I decided to just play WoW for a while and see if the mouse improved my gameplay any. A higher dpi is supposed to improve the mouse's functionality and responsiveness. So I loaded up the game and grabbed a new Vanilla Pepsi out of the fridge. Time to kick some kobold ass.

I noticed during my gameplay that movements in the game seemed much less fragmented than they were before. I keep my resolution set at 1028x786 with a refresh rate of 85Hz, which is pretty standard for the 15” screen on my laptop. The latency in game is usually pretty good at this setting, so I try not to deviate too far from that. That being said, I notice when things in the gameplay are a little off or a little better, and this pad did improve the play a bit.

As I pointed out before, the stickiness off the the porous bottom is damned nice for keeping it in place. I don't know if you've ever had your mousepad shift a little while gaming and the laser beams off the surface of your desk. When that happens, it's always at the most inopportune times and you end up seeing the ceiling of some warehouse while the other guys are straight up fragging your ass. Stick is good, my friends.

My final conclusion is that this is a very nice pad, more than capable of being stored in a laptop bag or used on the desktop for your heavy machinery. I wasn't too fond of the sparkled surface. Glitter is something that could have been done without, but it's there and there's nothing I can do about it. I don't plan on showing up to any LAN parties with it in tow, so I'm not going to fret over it. All in all, it does the job it sets out to do, and in the end, that is what sets the good apart from the mediocre.

The old adage that cold hands often conceal a warm heart has been dispelled by scientists, after they found how physically warm you are has a direct correlation to how nice you are to people. People holding a warm cup of coffee were found to be more generous and charitable - particularly about others - than individuals holding an iced coffee, the study found. The researchers believe the effect relates to childhood when emotional warmth given by a parent was often accompanied by the physical warmth of being held or hugged.

The Yale University research seems to disprove the old saying 'cold hands, warm heart' which has generally been seen to describe how a cool exterior often disguises a kind heart. To test the theory the scientists, who reported their results in the journal Science, carried out two studies involving a total of 94 undergraduates.

For the first they presented half the unwitting participants with a hot or ice cold coffee and then asked what they thought of a stranger after a brief meeting. They found that holding a hot cup of coffee led people to judge the stranger to be a "warmer" person, in terms of traits such as generosity and kindness, compared to a group of people who held a cup of iced coffee. In the second study the researchers had people, who thought they were evaluating a product, hold either a warm or cold object - hot pads or cold pads as used in muscle therapy- and then given a choice of reward for participating in the study: either a gift for a friend, or a reward for themselves.

The study found that people who held the hot pad were more likely to choose the gift for a friend, and people who held the cold pack were more likely to choose the reward for themselves. "It appears that the effect of physical temperature is not just on how we see others, it affects our own behaviour as well," Professor John Bargh, a psychologist who carried out the study. "Physical warmth can make us see others as warmer people, but also cause us to be warmer - more generous and trusting - as well."

His co-author Lawrence Williams, who has since moved to the University of Colorado, said he thought the effect related to childhood. "As a young child or infant, being held close by a care-giver with love and affection leads us to develop a concept of what it means to be a warm person, or to feel interpersonal warmth," he said. "But during those learning experiences, children are simultaneously being exposed to physically warm temperatures, through close contact with another human being."

Q: I am a 22-year-old law student who has pain in both my wrists. I do not recall hurting it playing sports or working out. A friend said that it may be from using the computer so much, taking notes in class and writing briefs. Usually the more I use them, the more they hurt.

A: It is very common in individuals who use a keyboard with great frequency that they will develop wrist and hand pain.

The most common problem is a form of tendinitis, which is an inflammation of the tendons from overuse. Another common cause of pain on the palmar side of the hand and wrist, which may also include numbness, is carpal tunnel syndrome. This too is often caused by overuse, which can result in compression of the median nerve in the hand and wrist.

Taking a mild anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen and varying the height of your keyboard may be helpful in decreasing your symptoms. Occasionally over-the-counter wrist splints, which can be obtained at most pharmacies, can also provide relief. However, if symptoms persist, I recommend that you see your family doctor or a hand specialist to improve the problem and keep it from recurring.

Until I read the much-talked-about The Migraine Brain, I hadn't realized that lots of migraineurs report frequently having cold hands and feet. I've often joked that from October to May my extremities are ice-cold, figuring it had something to do with my height, my circulation, my lack of exercise, and/or my tendency to feel faint rather easily. That being said, I never really thought of it as something "real"; I figured instead it was just one of those bothersome things about being skinny and lanky. Whatev.

But now I wonder if there might be something I can do to warm up! Even with socks on, my toes are frigid; when I go to hug the kids I babysit for, they shriek in delight as they run away from me, thinking I was trying to trick them by putting icy fingers on their skin. I've read a bit about Raynaud's Phenomenon, but I'm not sure if that is what plagues migraineurs or if there's something else going on all together.

In the meantime, I'll wear my hat and gloves outside even when others look at me like I'm a bit crazy. (I get cold even when it's in the 60s!)

Anyone else have cold hands and feet more often than so-called "regular" folks?

Losing the function of a hand can be devastating, especially when the hand is needed to work at the computer all day. Finding a new job is not easy and almost impossible in today's economic situation. Rehabilitating an injury is a lot of work. Of the two choices, we choose rehabilitation. The alternative of not holding a job, isn't an option.

The loss of the use of a person's computer mouse hand due to arthritis and poor circulation can make everyday computer tasks painful and dreadful. The pain from a sick computer mouse hand causes the hand to cramp, freeze and fingers become numb. Pills aren't always the solution and aren't an attractive idea. The only relief is not working, and that isn't a suggested option.

Most occupational interventions rely upon ingenuity and creativity. We relied upon a mouse hand warmer blanket pouch to hold the computer mouse and mouse pad. The blanket is made of fleece and covers the computer user's hand completely creating a warm house for the mouse and mouse pad. We inserted inside the mouse hand warmer blanket pouch an USB heated mouse and USB heated mouse pad to generate heat inside the blanket pouch housing.

The USB heated devices are designed with a carbon fibre. Carbon fibre generates infrared heat. Infrared heat is healing. As a matter of fact, the occupational related hand injuries will increase based on the continued widespread computer use activity. Hand pain associated with computer work is a common condition, especially for people who spend most of their day sitting and working at a computer using a computer mouse. To relieve the pain, a person either stops working or finds a solution. Infrared heaters are available to help relieve cold hand pain associated with using a computer mouse. A heated warm mouse and a heated warm mouse pad both contain a carbon fibre heating filament which heat up quickly to produce a healthy, healing computer hand environment. The infrared heat has massaging and sterilization qualities, and some say detoxifying and healing qualities, too.

An infrared heater is a body with a higher temperature which transfers energy to a body with a lower temperature through electromagnetic radiation. The most common filament material used for electrical infrared heaters is tungsten wire, which is coiled to provide more surface area. We just received the above item today and are currently using it to evaluate it's functionality and effectiveness. It's a 2.0 USB 4 Port Hub Heated Mouse Pad. The size is about 9" x 7" not including the metal hub attached to one end. There are two USB cords. One cord controls the lights and the second cord controls the heater warming function of the mouse pad. It's a very nice system with its pros and cons.

The Pros:

Heat source provides a very soothing warmth for the mouse hand and wrist.
Size is just right for a small hand
Lights are a steady blue glow which is very nice at night
Two plugs allow for the item to be energy efficient
Pad is a very smooth hard surface black
It looks very nice on the desk
It fits inside the Mouse Hand Warmer blanket pouch
It creates a very nice warmth inside the Mouse Hand Warmer blanket pouch

The Cons:

There's no wrist pad support
Pad's surface could be a little larger for better mouse movement
Cords are not labeled making it difficult to know which is for light/heat
